It was a nonstop party on stage and in the audience as fans were treated to back in the day favorites like Suffocate, Down, and Get Back. Check out the full set list below and make sure to catch MOTOGRATER on the Honoring Of The Sun Tour coming to a city near you!
I also had the amazing honor of interviewing Angel, that interview will be posted soon so stay tuned!

2011 WOODSHOCK: One Rockin' Weekend!
40 bands + 2 stages + Legend Valley = WOODSHOCK 2011!
2011 WOODSHOCK. August 5- 7th. Legend Valley Thornville, Ohio. Rock out for three days to the sounds of over 40 bands including favorite Ohio local and national touring acts like Bobaflex and Kottonmouth Kings. Tickets are $60 which is actually pretty good considering that fee includes camping, shower facilities, and more. This is one summer festival that you do not wanna miss!
The three must see up and coming Columbus bands during the festival in my opinion are Abstract Absence, 7th Cycle and SEVER.
Plain City, Ohio hard rockers Abstract Absence are currently working on a new album and will have some fresh tracks to serve at this year’s WOODSHOCK. No stranger to sharing the stage with heavy metal megastars, AA has opened for major label bands such as Cold, Kopek, and Mushroomhead.
Like Abstract Absence on Facebook!
For a some straight shooting rock n’ roll dipped in early 90’s nostalgia, one band to see during WOODSHOCK is definitely this year’s Rock on The Range, Battle of the Band champs 7th Cycle! Their well deserved success is exploding so it’s only right to see their added awesomeness to this schedule of good times.
Like 7th Cycle on Facebook!
Columbus metal outfit SEVER brings the BROOOTAL! Since the band’s inception in January 2010, SEVER continues to make big splashing waves amidst the Columbus metal music scene, opening for heavy hitters like SEVENDUST, All That Remains, Straight Line Stitch, Flaw and more! Guitarist Aaron Snyder wants you all to know: "SEVER is back by demand for WOODSHOCK 2011 and we have every intention of bringing you one CLASS A FACE MELTING PERFORMANCE! We played last year and it was an Amazing experience! We are looking forward to rocking WOODSHOCK 2011!”
Like SEVER on Facebook!

Strong Women In Music Concert Interview Series: The Main Event, MC Lyte
Interviews with MC Lyte, Dr. E and musical director Ronnie Burrage.
Before she rocked Penn State fans with hits like "Cha Cha Cha", "Poor Georgie", "Ruffneck" and “Self Destruction”, I had the honor and pleasure of catching up with MC Lyte for an exclusive EAR CANDI interview.
Thank you again MC Lyte, meeting you was truly a dream come true! - Ebony Jeanette
EAR CANDI: While in the studio recording "Self Destruction" with Daddy-O and LL Cool J, why did you and LL decide to change the original lyrics for your part?
MC LYTE: I think what I did on that rhyme originally was put in statistics, like hard core numbers of how many kids were actually dying due to violence and it was a little too strong. You know I have always been the one to tell the truth so we just broke it down and LL and I wrote it together. We took it line by line and really thought about what was going to be most potent, but not give so much information that it becomes overbearing.
EAR CANDI: What does it mean to be a strong woman in music to you?
MC LYTE: Stand up for what it is you believe, never be taken advantage of and do what it is that makes you happy!
EAR CANDI: What is your favorite lyric of all time?
MC LYTE: Oh boy! Well, Chuck D said it best: Because I’m public enemy number ONE!
EAR CANDI: You’ve been all over the world, where is the one place aside from your stomping grounds, you feel most at home?
MC LYTE: Philly reminds me most of New York.
EAR CANDI: Just My Take is your first self published literary piece, can we expect any future pieces from you, will they also be self published?
MC LYTE: You know what, I don't know - it depends on whether they are fiction or non, because I really don't like to wait, you know?
EAR CANDI: Is that why you chose to self publish rather than go though an agency?
MC LYTE: Yes, I have a literary agent but giving it to them means that the shape or the mold in which i speak would be changed as a result of editing.
EAR CANDI: What advice do you give to young female emcees who are working to break into the industry without over-sexualizing themselves for attention?
MC LYTE: You just have to stay true to who you are, speak truth and ask a lot of questions so that you can be educated about the decisions you make.
EAR CANDI: And you’ve done so much already, where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
MC LYTE: Oh I don't know, (chuckles) I go day by day!
EAR CANDI: Do you have a motto that you live by?
MC LYTE: Do whatever is necessary to be happy. So, whatever that means for you as an individual.
EAR CANDI: When you are on the road touring, what is the one item you can not be without?
MC LYTE: Probably my laptop or Ipod, something that gives me music - I really need that!
EAR CANDI: Artist receiving the most plays on your Ipod right now?
MC LYTE: Niki Minaj.

Strong Women In Music Concert Interview Series: The Opening Act, Dr. E
Interviews with MC Lyte, Dr. E and musical director Ronnie Burrage.
Led by world renowned drummer Ronnie Burrage, a live band composed of musicians Eli Byrne, Chulo Gatewood, Marvin Horne, and Adam Faulk accompanied the legendary MC Lyte for the Penn State Jazz Club Strong Women In Music concert held April 27th at Alumni Hall.
Penn State Student rappers Ugo, Equille Williams, Jackie Hodge and Drew Dub of the Hip-Hop/ Reggae ensemble Atlas Soundtrack (interview coming soon) also shared the stage with MC Lyte for a crowd pleasing performance of the game changing single “Self Destruction.”
EAR CANDI is pleased to present crew member Ebony Jeanette’s interviews with headliner MC Lyte, opening act Dr. E and musical director Ronnie Burrage.
A special thank you to the Penn State Jazz Club faculty advisor Eli Byrne for making it all possible!
Thanks again Dr. E for a great interview! - Ebony Jeanette
EAR CANDI: What does it mean to be a “Strong Woman In Music” to you?
Dr. E: Be who you are and keep grinding.
EAR CANDI: As the opening act for the Strong Women In Music concert, what do you feel right now is most exciting about your music?
Dr. E: Well, now I have gotten beyond the initial excitement when I first completed my project. Now I am proud of my music because it is a part of who I am and it makes me feel good that a lot of people like it and accept it and me for who I am. I am growing as a woman and a songwriter which is great! It feels so wonderful to open the evening for MC Lyte, she has always been an inspiration to me as an versatile entrepreneur and master of her craft.
EAR CANDI: Tell us about your day job, you were a professor at Penn State a few years back and currently at at Ohio State University right?
Dr. E: I am becoming more and more of who I really am and want to be. I used to think of myself as Elaine the singer-songwriter, Elaine the sister-girl from Cleveland, Dr. E the applied linguist who loves culture and African and Afro-diasporic cultures, Dr. E the community advocate. My selves are really not disparate. I am figuring out that I don't have to separate my music life from my scholarly and outreach life. I am all one person and I take me everywhere I go. It's cool!
EAR CANDI: You are a scholar and a songwriter wow! So what is your music writing process like? Does it just come to you?
Dr. E: I can have an idea and the music comes later, or sometimes I get the music and feeling and lyrics all at once, or I will experience an emotion or event and a song will come to me. I’ve had dreams where I saw myself singing a song I end up writing and other times, someone will just give me pre-recorded tracks and I''l vibe until something comes.
EAR CANDI: Who are you listening to the most right now on your ipod?
Dr. E: I'm listening to Georgia Anne Muldrow, Monica, Ronnie Burrage, MC Lyte, and Mary Mary.
EAR CANDI: What advice do you give to young girls who have made difficult life choices? How can they be Elevated?
Dr. E: We all make mistakes. Don't let your past define your future. You are love made straight from the creator, no matter your circumstances. Get the support you need. Reach out and keep striving for your goals.
EAR CANDI: Where can we buy your music?

Artist Interview: Ryan Mowry (Visions Of Sound)
Ryan Mowry's show of gig posters is bold and innovative. He peers deep into the soul of our image obsessed culture to create a visual history of our musically inclined world. In VISIONS OF SOUND, Ryan pays homage to four of his favorite bands: Converge, GY!BE, High on Fire, and Wovenhand. It was great to get a chance to beyond the minimally colored surface and tap into the mind of Ryan Mowry before the opening night of his exhibit taking place Saturday, April 2, 2011 at What The Rock.
I would like to thank Ryan again for taking the time to do this interview.
Interview with Ryan Mowry
PH For someone who has never seen your art, describe in your own words, your style of art. How art reflects you and how you convey your sound through your visions.
RM My style is of limited color, high contrast, and a love for black and white! It's also a art forum that I can "arrest motion" with the viewer.
PH Can you tell me a little about the origin of the idea for Visions Of Sound. Why do you choose to focus on music through art as opposed to politics, nature, or another life experience?
RM I choose to focus on gig posters because faith and politics are a constant theme in my art. This time I really wanted to show case my love for the music.
PH Much like music, art carries emotions, what emotions came up for you when you were creating the idea for Visions of Sound. Did you revert back to being in show audiences, or the first time you listened to a favorite song. Describe that experience.
RM Each piece for the show carries emotions that were taken from the music. For example, the Godspeed You Black Emperor image conveys a game of tension, with explosions of sound, and a mighty fall! Secondly, the Wovenhand image displays three finger 's (like a icon painting) which represents; the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost. Thirdly the snake which is a icon of evil and temptation, and lastly the rooster for denial as cast in the Bible and Peter's denial of Christ.
PH Gig posters seem to be what you are most known for and truly enjoy. What was the first gig poster you did and what would be the ultimate gig poster for you to design?
RM The first gig poster I did was for my friends band, Wing and Tusk (highly recommended). As far as the ultimate gig poster, maybe one for Fugazi or the MC5?? Truth be told there are so many I would love to do!
PH Where can we purchase your work prior to the exhibit?
RM You can also purchase some of my prints before the show at www.etsy.com/shop/pencilplan
*Visions of Sound pays homage to four of Ryan's favorite bands: Converge, GY!BE, High on Fire, and Wovenhand. Exhibit will be on display from April 2-30. Tues-Thurs, 12-7 p.m.; Fri-Sat, 12-8 p.m.; Sun, 12-6 p.m. Gallery Hop reception: April 2, 6-8 p.m at What The Rock (Short North)

Release Review: SUB X
After a winter hiatus, SUB X has returned to rock harder than ever! The band is busy working on a new album and have released two brand new tunes in addition to announcing their Spring 2011 tour.
Tracks One Night Stand and At War are just a taste of what’s to come from the Dayton, Ohio quartet.
First Impression: One Night Stand shows of the band’s instrumental chops and although vocals become a bit overreaching at times, the electrifying guitar solos make a solid introduction to the Sub X sound.
Sub X gets familiar and reaches in back into their earlier “Shotgun Hero” sound to give us At War, the hard rocking drum-laden reflection of shattered civility in the presence of chaos.
Overall, the Mötley Crüe inspired, instrumentally strong SUB X offers, a palette of rock; a little sleaze, grunge, grit and glam, complete with scuzzy punk undertones.
The tour for Mitch X, Nick X, Angus P, and Frizz begins March 26, in Dayton, Ohio at Hank’s Pub. Visit Myspace for the full schedule.
*SUB X is also competing in the 15th Annual Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands for a spot on the 2011 Vans Warped Tour. VOTE FOR THEM @ battleofthebands.com/u/subxband
