Hammercocks Beer and Bones Tour: Stop # 6 Columbus Ohio

On Tuesday June 7th the Hammercocks hit up Bernie's Distillery in Columbus with Sub X and Children of Reagan opening the night. This was the sixth stop on the Hammercocks Beer and Bones Tour which ended in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on June 11.

Children of Reagan sparked the mosh pit, playing hard and fast old school punk while Sub X led a high energy, beer skating set featuring dirty rock songs like One Night Stand, Your Future, and Shotgun Hero

Headliners Hammercocks’ rocked bodies all night with southern driven, heavy punk ‘n’ roll party tunes. They performed the bulk of their fire spitting selections from the Beer and Bones album however, did not end the night without tossing in some throwbacks for die-hard fans to enjoy.

Pledging their duty to serve communion at the altar of rock, Hammercocks combine elements early rock 'n roll, thrash metal and hell raisin country into whiskey drenched, punch you in the face punk rock. Always a good time!

Live Show Review: Andy Shaw Band at Rumba Cafe - Cinco de Mayo

For Rumba Cafe’s Cinco De Mayo celebration, Andy Shaw Band headlined an intimate evening of reggae tinged rock, bluegrass flavored folk rock, and something so mesmerizing from show openers from Joshua P. James and The Paper Planes I do not yet have a name for it.

Starting the night off right, Joshua P. James and the Paper Planes warmed up the crowd with fall down joke jams, travelin’ tunes, vengeance songs, love ditty's, and a charming little waltz about water displacement.

In Joshua’s voice you can pain, sorrow, redemption, laughter and joy as he executes soft melodies over simple chords. Evan on the kit and Brandon on the bass add ebb and flow to his smoky vocals that sound like a soulful combination of Johnny Cash, Darius Rucker and Xavier Rudd.

With the Rumba performance being the 4th show played to date, I cannot wait to see what is next for these talented three. If you missed them May 7th at Oldfield's on 4th with J. R. Fisher and Them Labs make sure to catch them at the Singing Moon Records Festival June 4 at Woodland's Tavern in Columbus.

Sporting festive sombreros, Lewis Brothers moved the crowd with vibrant bluegrass influenced, high energy folk rock. Armed with music made for dancing; this Chillicothe four piece performed a delightful collection of hip shaking covers and originals designed for our listening pleasure.

Throughout the performance, Dennis Foreman kept the energy high with fast boppin' beats on the drum kit while brothers Russell, Richard, and Jeff swapped instruments, took turns leading vocals, and blended their voices together producing beautiful harmonies that embody the spirit brotherly love.

A perfect prelude to Andy Shaw Band, The Lewis Brothers showcased outstanding instrumental talent with the versatile use of a stand up bass, mandolin, banjo, two guitars and lively percussion creating an extremely entertaining musical experience.

The celebratory scent of Corona and lime perfumed the air as Andy Shaw Band teleported listeners to a simpler time; where the sweet sound of music flows from stage to crowd in a seamless kinetic energy bringing positive vibrations to all who bask in its presence.

Like Andy says, “Who needs to feel anything that isn’t real.”

And feel we certainly did! Composed of lead singer & guitarist Andy Shaw, Chris Shaw on drums and backing vocals, Jim Shaw on keys, Eric Zelinkski on Guitar and Matt Paetsch on Bass, the musical magnetism of Andy Shaw Band is an emotion all its own, marked by peace and love, conveyed through song and dance.

ASB opened with the lovers rock groove We All Belong; an illuminating single from the new album Own Resolve about the power of people coming together through love. Like poetry in motion, original favorites such as Shuffleroo, Righteous Ones, and Own Resolve followed, offering a party platter of easy skanking rhythms accentuated by Andy’s gift for melody.

Highlights of the night also included two tasty renditions of the Bob Marley classics, Could You Be Love and Kinky Reggae. Both covers and originals filled the cafe with positivity and irie vibrations in an intermix of folk, rock, and reggae. Featured solos from Andy & Eric on guitar and Matt on bass were also showcased throughout the set.

Overall, an evening with Andy Shaw Band always equals a good time so if you are in the mood for some soul shakedown style reggae, rooted in rock, keep tabs on their upcoming tour dates by visiting http://www.andyshawband.com

I got a chance to catch up with lead singer Andy before the show to discuss the meaning behind the new album, musical influences and upcoming performances!

Release Review: SUB X

After a winter hiatus, SUB X has returned to rock harder than ever! The band is busy working on a new album and have released two brand new tunes in addition to announcing their Spring 2011 tour.
Tracks One Night Stand and At War are just a taste of what’s to come from the Dayton, Ohio quartet.

First Impression: One Night Stand shows of the band’s instrumental chops and although vocals become a bit overreaching at times, the electrifying guitar solos make a solid introduction to the Sub X sound.

Sub X gets familiar and reaches in back into their earlier “Shotgun Hero” sound to give us At War, the hard rocking drum-laden reflection of shattered civility in the presence of chaos.

Overall, the Mötley Crüe inspired, instrumentally strong SUB X offers, a palette of rock; a little sleaze, grunge, grit and glam, complete with scuzzy punk undertones.

The tour for Mitch X, Nick X, Angus P, and Frizz begins March 26, in Dayton, Ohio at Hank’s Pub. Visit Myspace for the full schedule.

*SUB X is also competing in the 15th Annual Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands for a spot on the 2011 Vans Warped Tour. VOTE FOR THEM @  battleofthebands.com/u/subxband

The Latest Crave: Omen World Tour: Soulfly w/ Straight Line Stitch and INCITE!

(Alrosa Villa, Columbus, Ohio December 5, 2010)

The spirit of the late Dimebag Darrell reigned over Alrosa Villa as bands Demons Within, Sourblood, Desperate Union, INCITE, Straight Line Stitch and Soulfly delivered a powerful show in his honor just three days before the 6th year anniversary of his wrongful death.

Starting things off on the Omen world tour was Cleveland, Ohio based unit, Demons Within. The chill of their cold should rushed goosebumps of anticipation over the crowd and then surged into a stroke of heat as J.C.B let out a torturous scream amidst the evil invoking whisper; “the demons keep coming,".  It was at this moment, the show had officially begun! Dedicating a mournful number to our fallen friend, Eternal Night Demons Within truly showed off their musical dexterity and vocal flexibility. The low rumble to high screech movement is very Lamb of God influenced and their ability to be mechanical yet free and high energy from start to finish was impressive and well received by the moving crowd. Demons Within consists of five unique individuals; lead vocalist J.C.B., lead/rhythm guitarist-backing vocals T.C., lead/rhythm guitarist Dark Seclusion, bassist Demize and D.F.D. on drums.

Taking the stage next was Columbus metallers Sourblood. Brutal and explosive, Bloomy comes out rocking with their single, Burning Memory, exciting the crowd with his contagious energy, he paces about the stage with a panic twitch in his eyes and leans back into a perfectly timed scream to accompany his brainless head bang. Strong reactions came from jump song, Fight For Yourself, Abstract, and The Burial, all are songs from their brand new self titled album available here. With Justin Bloomfield aka Bloomy on vocals; Jerry Davis behind the kit and backing vocals; John Mills and Brock Richards on guitars; and Jim Klimek on bass, Sourblood is  a thrilling and fun addition to Omen World Tour lineup.

Fresh out of high school, and formed just over a year ago, Desperate Union,  provided a more melodic selection of hard rock. Toronto, Canada natives posses a heavier, incubus like sound and although their tunes were well written for commercial mass consumption, the melancholy delivery was a bit out shadowed by such previous high energy acts.

The metal returned in the form of Arizona’s own INCITE, featuring Max Cavalera's stepson, Richie Cavalera on lead vocals. A talented group of musicians with room to expand; they also paid tribute to Pantera guitarist, Dimebag Darryl with an audience favorite “The End Result.” Even the security guards were compelled to move as Incite pummeled the crowd with their violence inciting sound.

The stage goes to black and the Straight Line Stitch takeover begins as electric orange and platinum streaks smite the air and the vocals of Alexis Brown shatter the silence and with a deathlike growl that transitions seamlessly into a velvet smooth melody. Stretching out beyond the traditional metalcore template, Straight Line Stitch combines intensity and harmony to create a live-wire performance. Heads spin off bodies as they bang to the rhythm of hits What You Do To Me, Bleeding Heart Theory, and Black Veil. We also got a fresh listen to Ballroom Brawl, a new track off their album due in March. An invigorating performance, and just the beginning of what is to come from Straight Line Stitch. Alexis Brown on killer vocals, Seth Thacker and Tim Chappell on guitars, Jason White on bass, and Patrick Haynes on drums.

Sending the packed crowd into near riot, Max Cavalera, Mark Rizzo and Johnny Chow of Soulfly took control with the opener, Blood, Fire, War, Hate. The very walls of Alrosa trembled in the uprising of bodies gathering in the pit. Prophecy came next without hesitation or pause, backed by a relentless rhythm section and vocals that morph from soul scarring growls into grisly screams, illuminated by furious riffs and epic breakdowns. With the crowd in full effect, Max gave us Back To The Primitive and Seek “N” Strike then a high energy performance of Babylon, a favorite of mine. Kingdom gave me chills and anarchy ensued when 2 Sepultura classics, Roots and Chaos A.D were unleashed. A sinister delivery of Bloodbath and Beyond gave way to a brutal Respect followed by a special percussion interlude by Cavalera, Rizzo and Chow on large, upturned snare drums. It was a fearless introduction to the tour-de-force experience of Frontline. The rest of the set included Downstroy, Rise of the Fallen from the new album The Omen, a tease of Jump The Fuck Up and ended with Eye for an Eye and a vicious Rizzo solo. Behemoth and statuesque, Max’s expansive vocals are mind-blowing in their ostentatious-ness, his artistry is like an epic vision quest and he is rightfully exalted as a true innovator of thrash and tribal metal- a master of his craft!

The Latest Crave: Wednesday 13

Murderdolls member Wednesday 13 exudes the definition of extreme metal master as a front man, solo artist, and founder of his own band with the same name.

Previously playing in Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13, Bourbon Crow and most recently Gunfire 76, Wednesday’s off putting style continues to attract those that relish in his morbidly hysterical sense of humor, a trait fans have worshiped since Maniac Spider Trash.

The band Wednesday 13 consists of Ghastly on drums, Kid Kid on bass, Matt "Pig" Montgomery on guitar and Wednesday on lead vocals and guitar.

All of the writing is done by Wednesday, and horror movies still heavily permeate his lyrics as albums vary from the cheesy, ironic metal-core sounding Fang Bang to the heavier, more dreary tones discovered in previously released efforts, Bloodwork, Translyvania 90210, and Skeletons.

Overall, Wednesday 13 delivers a punked out mix of glam, goth, spit, shock and rock with raspy vocals, thrashing guitars, skillful and cohesive drums, and an earthquaking baseline with the right to remain violent.

Basically, if you like the Murderdolls, you’ll enjoy the terror-tastic horror punk from the North Carolina based band Wednesday 13.

The latest offering, From Here to the Hearse is a vinyl only collection piece with only 1,000 copies distributed in the U.S. Get your hands on it if you are lucky - check out the track listing below.

The Latest Crave: Otep

We’ve become a nation of wolves ruled by sheep owned by swine overfed & put to sleep and while the media elite decrees what to think i am wide awake on the edge and on the brink. Otep Shamaya, Smash The Control Machine

Otep’s vocal poetry is lurid and explosive in the album Smash the Control Machine. From the opening track Otep marches in and snatches the plastic mask off of American capitalism and homophobia to reveal its hypocrisy and vileness with riot inciting screams and thought provoking whispers. The return of hellions Moke and Evil J to this album is a welcomed chance for fans to revisit the earlier, more savage musical experiences from House of Secrets and Sevas Tra.

The strongest selections include the politically fueled anthem Smash The Control Machine, the call to action track Rise Rebel Resist, Numb and Dumb which speaks out against social complacency, and the exceptional ballad “Ur A Wmn Now” in which Otep sheds her outright anger to expose her inner vulnerability and mental / emotional anguish of growing up girl. While the music is what moves us, it’s Shamaya’s explicit and intelligent lyricism that continues add depth to the band’s gritty thrash-core delivery.

Take this band for what you will but you cannot deny their ability to consume your senses with musically potent alchemy. Smash The Control Machine was released August 18, 2009 on Victory Records and is available everywhere music is sold.

The Latest Crave: FeedUs

Animal: This song connects to the barbarian within. The raw, blistering vocals that fester over grind-core guitar riffs express primitive urges that tussle back and forth between hatred and desire. Most definitely the kind of song that is meant to be performed live in order to encompass the full experience of the animal. Check out the video below of FeedUs performing “Animal” at Battle of the Bands in Orlando, FL.

Get Your Stripes: A hard and heavy anthem with softer vocals but still angry enough to unleash the war-mongering fury that makes this song memorable.

No Good cranks up the intensity using heavier guitar riffs and more emphasis on throaty growls and raspy metallic vocals. A song about amounting to nothing and not giving a sh*t so much vocalist Clay Sapp screams it from the arches of his lungs for a few bars. Want fight music? Play this song.

Roomush changes the pace with cynical and unforgiving vocals that play off the hard edge guitar to deliver a love scorned track that exposes the inner pain of an abandoned and broken heart.

The song to head bang to the most is Lazarus. This solid hard rock track delivers big vocals and hard hitting drums that beef up the overall quality and gives it that classic AOR sound; showing their potential for mainstream hard rocker status.

Overall, FeedUs satiates musical hunger pangs and quenches metal mouth with blood squirting vocals, pus popping bursts of thundering drums, and sick and dirty guitar riffs in a sweat soaked ingestion of grunge flavored rock.

Coming a long way from living with no electricity among other hardships; this band continues to perform throughout Florida and work their fingers to the bone to fuel their dream of playing the music that feeds us. Making some serious headway among hard and heavy rock followers; FeedUs is number 2 on the Reverbnation metal charts for Jasper, Florida. FeedUs consists of Clay Sapp on vocals, Brad Butler on Guitar, Daniel Thigpen on Drums, and Danny Herring on Bass.

The Latest Crave: Rob Zombie - Icon

As part of the Icon Series launched by Universal Music Enterprises, Rob Zombie – Icon (Geffen/UMe) was released earlier this month as a single and double disc set. What’s different about them? The single version is twelve track crash course in the best of Zombie available only at Wal-Mart, while the 24 track double disc set offers a heavier dose of the devilman from the early days of White Zombie to the Hellbilly Deluxe favorites of today exclusively offered at Best Buy.

In my opinion, the only thing better than Rob Zombie is White Zombie. I recommend shelling out the few extra bucks to get the double disc set, which features La Sexorcisto favorites “Thunder Kiss ’65″ and “Black Sunshine”, as well as Astro Creep 2000 mega hits “More Human than Human” and “Super-Charger Heaven”.

Rob Zombie’s Icon is a dicephalus delight featuring the hard rocking classics of White Zombie and the angrier moods of his later work that stick to the insides of die-hard metal skulls like mouldering corpses into fresh graves. The best of everything real fans already own; Icon revises and updates the Zombie collection and is an excellent addition to your Halloween horror mix this year.

The Latest Crave: Pittersplatter

Pittersplatter. A demonic monstrosity of dark forces converge in a terrifying cosmic explosion of electronic sound waves to exploit the most vulnerable of ear drums.

Known as the most controversial band in Oklahoma, Pittersplatter is a ferocious musical creature composed of Worm Necroticus Splatter, Menace, and Thursday 12. Their latest album, The Dawn of Carnage will be released on Dyskfunctional Records November 15, 2010.

Encompassing music not primarily meant for dancing, but derived from dance-oriented styles; Pittersplatter infuses the horrors, abominations, and vile infestations of the human experience into a guttural, growling electro-industrial sound scape that is served best via live performance. Listen closely to their music and you can peel back the textured layers of each instrument; synths, keys, drum machines, and mixers to expose the beast-like, spirit summoning vocals that encapsulate Pittersplatter’s nightmarish sound.

Witness the Pittersplatter phenomenon this month every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at Tumbleweed Dance Hall & Concert Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma or download the sadistic musical offerings via Amazon.

The Latest Crave: TaNeal

I had the pleasure of meeting TaNeal at the International Soul Music Summit that took place in August. If you are in the mood for some raw rhythm and blues with gangster girl flow  - check out Westerville, Ohio's own TaNeal.

A new artist with a brand new track for every overplayed rap song about needing a dime; you can leave the change behind because TaNeal is way more than currency. Witty pop flavored rap lyrics, with hints of Baduizm in the vocals- Currency is a combination of old school R&B and Hip-Hop in response to new school slang. No more currency - women are way more than dimes.

Now or Neva has a Maxwell feel and starts out with TaNeal showing off her pretty soprano over smooth rhythm and blues. A song about the need to break free and be yourself. Worth a listen especially if you are in the mood for a soulful tun turned blue.

L2L is where TaNeal will make you learn to love her and get on the dance floor. This track is a fistpumpumping dance groove and features a rap solo by R.Y.A.N. with the Drawing Board Experience.

TaNeal's raw talent and street sass has gained her significant buzz giving her the opportunity to open for major R&B acts such as Day 26 and Shirley Murdock. Currently working on a new demo for her next album for hip-hop soul fans and if this next one is anything like the L2L or Now or Neva with tighter production, TaNeal will be on the fast track to being one of the hottest in hip hop soul with her forthcoming project.

5 Reasons Why Every Artist Should Register with SoundExchange

Did You Know?  If you performed on and or own the masters of a sound recording, you can collect royalties from anyone who streams that track digitally.(source)

If you are a singer/songwriter or vocalist, this could mean a check is out there waiting, with your name on it!

Over the summer, I attended the 5th Annual International Soul Music Summit (Founded by Terry Bello) where I learned about the millions of dollars in revenue that recording artists throughout the country are not receiving for their digital airplay.

Digging deeper I discovered a roaring debate about a piece of legislation called the  Performance Rights Act.  The implementation of this bill into law could drastically change the way recording artists are compensated for their creative contributions...for the better.

A little about SoundExchange....

SoundExchange is the first organization formed in the United States to collect performance royalties for sound recording copyright owners (SRCOs), featured and non-featured artists. SoundExchange is an independent nonprofit performance rights organization that currently represents over 3,500 record companies, their 6000 labels and thousands of artists united in receiving a fair price for the licensing of their music in a new digital world. Our members include small, medium and large independent record companies, as well as the major label groups and artist-owned labels. (Source)

The 5 Reasons Why Every Artist Should Register With SoundExchange

1. Claim the money you earned! You recorded the song, now get paid for it!

Regardless of your private agreements, when you are the master owner of a recording you are entitled to 50% of the royalties, period. (source)

2. No matter how big or small, the money is yours!
So you may not be pulling in millions of dollars in royalties yet, but don't let that stop you from claiming the $50 $500 or $5000 that you may have generated from your music.

3. Registration is 1-2-3  EASY!
With a plethora of fact sheets and FAQ's on their website; it only takes a few minutes to fill out the form and start collecting your cash. There is even a phone number to call if you have additional questions!

4. There is strength in numbers and together we can make a difference.
When you join SoundExchange you join an informed network of over 3000 companies and labels supporting legislation to gain performance rights for artists.

5. And the best part, it's FREE!
SoundExchange is an independent, nonprofit performance rights organization and does not charge its members a fee to join or to collect the royalties they deserve.

Did You Know? In 2009 alone, SoundExchange notified more than 15,000 artists, owed more than $9 million in all. (source)

In conclusion...

If you think there’s even a slight chance that you are owed money, it is imperative that you register at SoundExchange.com.

Lady Gaga just joined and so can you! Claim you money today! It's easy and free!

The Latest Crave: 3 Quarters Dead

3 Quarters Dead (or alternatively 3QD) is not new to the music scene.Through the years, they have played with some of my personal favorites Mushroomhead and Chimaira and also some of the biggest names in the hard rock and heavy metal industry including Soilwork and Shadows Fall. After previously releasing two albums; Blueprint of a Strange Mind and Between Angels and Demons, 3QD is back and currently kicking ass across the country, splitting eardrums with their latest LP "Once Upon This Broken Glass," by now available on Amazon.

Of all songs I played over and over, and over; I found that 3QD truly comes into their own skin in The Coming of Death. Lead vocalist, Jason Sain is best on tracks like this where he tears off your head with cantankerous roars from the gutters of his soul. A thundering mix of soft and heavy, old and newer metal influences can be heard throughout the album but on this track, 3QD truly reveals their inner demon to be an early Coal Chamber and more melodic Mudvayne fusion.

A cold and tortured emotional tempest of intricate musicianship; each instrument adds a unique layer to their overall sound. My one wish is that they explore the more murky depths of metal because although the softer stuff is good, the heaviness is where the mesmerizing comes in.

Once Upon This Broken Glass also features Peter Witchers of Soilwork courtesy of Nuclear Blast Records. Get your copy today at Amazon.

The Latest Crave: Charlie Drown

Charlie Drown’s Pretty Pieces conjures up iconic images of death, sex, gore and glamour in an  electro-clash of metallic trash-core, kill-girl-kill punk.

Music can be about darkness, extreme emotion, magick and faith. – Charlie Drown
From the best of two previously released projects,  Pieces And Parts and Pretty Machine Gun comes Pretty Pieces, the first album released on Dyskfunctional Records. In a sentence; Pretty Pieces professes metaphors of self loathing, destruction, lust, death and passion in a poetically poisoned concoction of dark and melodic lyrical expression.

A cohesive chain of beautiful chaos; each track harnesses what fans enjoy most about Charlie – that addictive bitchiness she infuses into every lyric, her relentless power pipes that can go from a growling bass to a head ripping high pitch to compliment edgy guitar riffs with ear piercing energy.

From Pretty Machine Gun to Justine to See Monsters, Charlie pulls us deeper into the raw mutations of heavy metal, extracting elements of punk, metal-core, and electronica to awaken audiences to a new sound incomparable to anything previously heard from the aforementioned genres. Get a pretty little piece of this album, now available at the Charlie Drown store and now available on ITunes.

Crazy X, a sexy and violent single already creating quite a buzz from the forthcoming project Theta Rhythm is now on Rock Band.

Charlie also supports the survival of Elephants. A portion of all sales go directly to the elephant sanctuary. www.elephantsanctuary.org

The Latest Crave: Deadwater Rising

With soul shredding energy, complex riffing, and deep, rough vocals Dead Water Rising delivers technical brutality with no regard to the trending label obsession in heavy metal music.  Deadwater Rising creates an interesting atmosphere of authenticity and it is clear to see (and hear)  that this band was came together out of an intense desire to make music they love, not  just to make "hits." Not every song will be liked by mainstream listeners but every song has that metal to the core - primal yet complex texture to it making Deadwater Rising worth a good long listen for tried and true metal heads in search of something new. Scene kids, sorry but this band is not for you.

Dead Water Rising will headline an interesting selection of noise on October 17 at CKay's Bar & Grill in New Lexington Ohio.

The Latest Crave: State of Affliction

You may know her as the guitarist for deliciously thrash metal band Reverend H. Chronicles but State of Affliction’s Candice Kiser also has her own project; State of Affliction. As lead vocalist of SOA, Candice inspires her audience through music and philanthropy. Singing and performing for Tastebuds to raise monies for cancer benefit and other charitable efforts; State of Affliction’s Candice Kiser gives back to her community while holding down a solo career, and still finds time to write pure driven alternative songs based on real life experiences.

“Behind Every song is a story” - Candice Kiser

Thoughts on a few favorite tracks:

A lamented life: Unknown Face carries a dark message of a an abandoned love over a light and a more mainstream melody - a alternative pop track with the potential to be a major hit.

Boldly covering the great Cradle of Filth single Nymphetamine; State of Affliction’s dark angel rendition is a credit to the delicacy of her vocals - beckoning you to lust after her haunting sound.

Shattered Glass depicts the back and forth of a brutal fight between lovers and is packed with riveting emotional breakdowns from the memories of a painful and violent past relationship.

A metal injected alternative track; Disaster is sinister and heavy but also reminiscent of more melancholy Hole. Check out the video below.

State of Affliction is vampyricly addictive sound expressing the alluring beauty that comes through deep rooted pain and bursts open into a dark and lush collection of moods and atmospheres.

Check out her live performance of "Disaster" below!
