Album Review: Mudjunkie (Self-Titled EP)

Winston Salem rockers Mudjunkie are back on the scene after a few years and a few lineup changes. Having only evolved from their hiatus, the band is quickly gaining acclaim across the country, headlining shows and sharing the stage with acts like Seven Mary Three, Mercy Fall, Sponge, Crossfade, and Baptized By Fire featuring Jesse Blaze of Growing Up Twisted (A&E). Mudjunkie is also officially endorsed by InTune Guitar Picks and sponsored by Guitars USA and Daydreamers Rock N' Roll Emporium.

Listening In. Walk Away makes a great first impression with a quietly entering drum 'n' bass foundation that unleashes heavy staccato riffs over Buck’s acoustic-to-aggressive vocals that echo a new school Lane Staley.
The second standout, Holding On is a particularly strong and emotive piece built around layered vocals and lightning guitar fills.

Up next, Dreams (Fleetwood Mac cover) is an alt rock gem played the Mudjunkie way. Rocking a little harder than the original, this cover flawlessly pairs power and melody against driving back beats.
The slower-paced, Coming Down is infused with the perfect serving of sorrow as Buck’s thick vocals rise over searing riffs then quickly dissipates as the introspective guitar solo welcomes a breakdown of epic proportions.

The EP concludes with Black & White, an earlier creation and immediate fan favorite for its fast paced shout along lyrics, high energy, and no frills rock and roll attitude.

Overall, Mudjunkie [Buck Saunders (lead vocals) Chris Hill (guitar) Danny Chatfield (guitar) Steve Rivera (bass) Anthony Foltz (drums)] creates an atmosphere in the vein of Alice in Chains and even a little Queensryche. Yet, their sound is fresh, modern, and maintains originality. On a mission to bring solidarity back to bands, Mudjunkie lives to create unforgettable live shows, and to cover the world in mud this Spring with the launch of their new album.

The Latest Crave: Rob Zombie - Icon

As part of the Icon Series launched by Universal Music Enterprises, Rob Zombie – Icon (Geffen/UMe) was released earlier this month as a single and double disc set. What’s different about them? The single version is twelve track crash course in the best of Zombie available only at Wal-Mart, while the 24 track double disc set offers a heavier dose of the devilman from the early days of White Zombie to the Hellbilly Deluxe favorites of today exclusively offered at Best Buy.

In my opinion, the only thing better than Rob Zombie is White Zombie. I recommend shelling out the few extra bucks to get the double disc set, which features La Sexorcisto favorites “Thunder Kiss ’65″ and “Black Sunshine”, as well as Astro Creep 2000 mega hits “More Human than Human” and “Super-Charger Heaven”.

Rob Zombie’s Icon is a dicephalus delight featuring the hard rocking classics of White Zombie and the angrier moods of his later work that stick to the insides of die-hard metal skulls like mouldering corpses into fresh graves. The best of everything real fans already own; Icon revises and updates the Zombie collection and is an excellent addition to your Halloween horror mix this year.
